Learning Outcomes
- Students will be able to describe the biology of addiction, including its etiology, course and prognosis.
- Students will be able to apply different theoretical perspectives on addiction.
- Students will be able to list the unique properties of different substances, including but not limited to: alcohol, cocaine, marijuana, heroin, and nicotine.
- Students will be able to discuss ecological issues in chemical dependency as they relate to poverty, racism, classism and sexism.
- Students will be able to describe the effects of chemical dependency on families.
- Students will be able to discuss the special needs of different groups affected by chemical addictions: women, Native Americans, Hispanics, the Elderly, African-Americans, Gays and Lesbians, Adolescents, and the Mentally Ill Chemical Abuser (MICA).
- Students will be able to describe the role of the practitioner in the treatment of chemical dependency.
- Students will be able to describe substance abuse treatment, settings, and modalities.
